Fast Infoset is an international standard that defines a binary encoding format for the XML Information Set (XML Infoset), providing a compact and fast alternative to traditional character-based XML. What is Fast Infoset?
Fast Infoset is jointly standardized by the ITU-T (Recommendation X.891) and ISO/IEC (ISO/IEC 24824-1). While standard XML serializes the XML Information Set into human-readable text using angle brackets, whitespace, and textual data representations, Fast Infoset serializes that exact same Information Set into an optimized binary stream.
Because it adheres directly to the W3C XML Information Set specification, Fast Infoset maintains full semantic equivalence with standard XML. Applications can convert between textual XML and Fast Infoset without any loss of data, structure, attributes, or namespaces.
How Fast Infoset Replaces Textual XML
Fast Infoset optimizes data representation and eliminates the overhead inherent in parsing text-based XML documents through several core mechanisms:
- String Indexing and Tables: Repeated strings—such
as element names, attribute names, namespace URIs, and commonly repeated
values—are stored in indexed vocabulary tables. Instead of writing out a
full string repeatedly (e.g.,
<transactionStatus>), Fast Infoset transmits the full string once and references it via an integer index in subsequent occurrences. - Direct Binary Data Encoding: Primitive data types such as integers, floating-point numbers, and byte arrays can be serialized directly as native binary sequences rather than converted to string representations. This eliminates the CPU overhead associated with base64 encoding or parsing textual numeric strings.
- Bit-Level State Representation: Structural delimiters (like opening tags, closing tags, and attribute boundaries) are replaced by compact bit flags and byte codes.
Key Advantages Over Standard XML
Accelerated Parsing and Serialization
Textual XML requires parsers to scan streams character by character to detect tag boundaries, escape sequences, and character encodings (e.g., UTF-8 handling). Fast Infoset uses known-length binary blocks and direct byte offsets, allowing parsers to skip unneeded sections and assemble data models (such as DOM, SAX, or StAX) with significantly lower CPU utilization.
Reduced Bandwidth and Memory Footprint
Fast Infoset files are typically much smaller than equivalent raw XML files. While generic compression algorithms (like Gzip) can also reduce textual XML size, they require decompression before the XML parser can read the document. Fast Infoset achieves compression-like size reductions natively while remaining immediately parseable.
Seamless Integration with Existing Tooling
Because Fast Infoset is an alternative serialization of the XML Information Set, it integrates directly into existing XML processing pipelines. Developers can use standard XML APIs (such as JAX-WS for SOAP web services) and simply swap the serialization layer from text to binary without rewriting application business logic.
