Windows 11 Notifications and Quick Settings Guide

Windows 11 redesigns how users interact with system alerts and everyday controls by separating them into two dedicated interface elements on the taskbar. Instead of the unified Action Center found in Windows 10, Windows 11 features an independent Notification Center paired with a calendar, alongside a distinct Quick Settings flyout panel for hardware and connectivity toggles. This guide explains how both systems function, how to access them, and how to customize them for optimal workflow.

The Notification Center and Calendar

The Notification Center houses all application alerts, system messages, and calendar information.

Accessing Notifications

Mouse/Touch: Click the Date and Time display on the far right of the taskbar.
Keyboard Shortcut: Press Win + N.

How It Works

Grouped Alerts: Notifications appear grouped by application. Clicking the down arrow expands an alert group to view individual messages.
Actionable Banners: Users can reply directly to messages, dismiss individual alerts by clicking the “X”, or clear all notifications at once using the “Clear all” button at the top.
Integrated Calendar: Below or alongside the notifications is the interactive monthly calendar view, which can be collapsed or expanded to view upcoming dates.
Do Not Disturb and Focus: The top of the Notification Center includes a quick toggle for “Do Not Disturb” (which mutes incoming banner alerts and sends them straight to the tray) and controls to initiate a Focus session with integrated timers.

The Quick Settings panel provides instant access to frequently changed system settings without opening the full Windows Settings app.

Mouse/Touch: Click the unified system status icon group (Wi-Fi, Volume, and Battery) located to the left of the Date and Time.

Status Toggles: Includes interactive tiles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, Battery Saver, Night Light, Accessibility features, and Mobile Hotspot. Clicking the main icon toggles the feature on or off, while clicking the arrow next to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth opens inline sub-menus to select networks or devices directly.
Sliders: Features dedicated, smooth sliders for adjusting master volume and display brightness (on supported screens/laptops).
Media Playback Controls: When audio or video is playing in a compatible browser or media app, playback controls (play, pause, skip, track info) appear at the top of the panel.
Customization: Users can click the pencil (“Edit quick settings”) icon at the bottom of the panel to add, remove, or drag and rearrange toggles according to personal preference.

Managing Notification Behaviors in Settings

To fine-tune how and when alerts appear, users can navigate to Settings > System > Notifications:

Per-App Controls: Choose which apps are permitted to send notifications, whether they show banner pop-ups, play sounds, or display content on the lock screen.
Priority Alerts: Configure critical apps that can bypass Do Not Disturb rules.
Automated Schedules: Set automatic rules for Do Not Disturb, such as during specific hours, while duplicating a display, or when playing full-screen games.
