Set Different Wallpapers on Virtual Desktops in Windows 11

Windows 11 allows you to customize each virtual desktop with its own unique background, making it easier to visually separate different projects, workflows, or personal tasks. This guide outlines the exact steps to assign distinct wallpapers to individual virtual desktops using built-in Windows 11 settings.

Step 1: Open Task View

To manage your virtual desktops, open the Task View interface using either of the following methods: * Click the Task View icon (two overlapping squares) on your taskbar. * Press the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Tab.

Step 2: Create or Select a Virtual Desktop

  1. In the Task View pane along the bottom or top of your screen, identify the desktop you want to customize.
  2. If you need a new workspace, click the New desktop button (the plus icon +).

Step 3: Access the Background Options

  1. Hover your cursor over the virtual desktop thumbnail you want to modify.
  2. Right-click the thumbnail.
  3. From the context menu that appears, select Choose background.

Step 4: Select Your Custom Wallpaper

After selecting “Choose background,” Windows 11 will automatically open the Settings > Personalization > Background menu:

  1. Under the Personalize your background section, make sure the dropdown menu is set to Picture.
  2. Select an image from Recent images, or click Browse photos to choose a custom image stored on your computer.
  3. Once selected, the image will instantly apply exclusively to that specific virtual desktop.

Step 5: Repeat for Other Desktops

To set different wallpapers for other virtual desktops: 1. Press Windows Key + Tab again. 2. Right-click the next desktop thumbnail. 3. Select Choose background and pick a different image.
