How Windows 11 Clipboard History Stores Copied Items

Windows 11 includes a built-in Clipboard History tool that allows users to copy, store, and access multiple items—such as text, rich formatting, and images—rather than only keeping the most recently copied item. This article explains how the feature captures data, where that data is stored in the system, and how to view and paste your saved history into any application.

How to Enable and Open Clipboard History

By default, the standard clipboard only holds one item at a time. To activate the multi-item storage feature:

1. Open Settings on your Windows 11 PC.
2. Navigate to System and select Clipboard.
3. Toggle the Clipboard history switch to On.

Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + V. If the feature is currently disabled, a small window will appear with a button allowing you to turn it on immediately.

How Windows 11 Stores Copied Data

Once enabled, every time you copy something using Ctrl + C, right-click Copy, or a cut command, Windows automatically adds the entry to a dedicated clipboard queue.

• Capacity and Types: The clipboard history can hold up to 25 items. It supports plain text, formatted rich text (HTML), and images smaller than 4 MB.
• FIFO Management: The storage operates on a “First In, First Out” (FIFO) basis. When the 25-item limit is reached, the oldest unpinned item is automatically deleted to make room for the new entry.
• Temporary RAM Storage: Items are stored in temporary system memory (RAM). When you shut down or restart your computer, the unpinned clipboard history is cleared automatically.
• Cloud Synchronization (Optional): In the Clipboard settings menu, you can enable Sync across your devices. When active, copied text is encrypted and synced via your Microsoft account to other Windows devices signed in to the same account.

How to Paste Multiple Items from History

To paste items from your stored history into a document, browser, or message field:

1. Click to place your text cursor where you want the item to appear.
2. Press Windows Key + V to bring up the Clipboard History pop-up menu.
3. Scroll through the list of recent clips.
4. Click on the specific text block or image you want to insert. The selected item will immediately paste into your active application.

To paste another item from your history, simply move your cursor to the next location, press Windows Key + V again, and select the next item.

Managing Saved Items

The clipboard interface provides additional controls for managing your stored content:

• Pinning Items: Click the three dots (...) next to an entry (or the pin icon directly) and select Pin. Pinned items remain in your history permanently, even after restarting the computer or clearing your history.
• Deleting Individual Items: Click the three dots next to a specific item and choose the Delete (trash can) icon.
• Clearing the History: Click the Clear all button at the top of the Clipboard History menu to wipe out all unpinned entries instantly.
