Preparing a Windows 11 computer for resale or recycling requires completely removing your personal files, de-authorizing licenses, and securely wiping the internal storage drive so your data cannot be recovered by the next user. This guide outlines the essential steps to safely transition your PC, from backing up your files to performing a secure factory reset that leaves the system ready for its new owner.

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Before erasing anything, save any files, browser bookmarks, and game saves you wish to keep: * Copy important data to an external hard drive or USB flash drive. * Alternatively, sync your folders using cloud storage platforms like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. * Record any application license keys or software credentials you will need on a new device.

Step 2: Sign Out of Accounts and De-authorize Software

To prevent activation issues and protect your personal subscriptions: * Open installed paid software (such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, or specialized software) and deactivate or sign out of the licenses. * Remove your computer from your Microsoft account online by logging into account.microsoft.com/devices and selecting Remove device.
