How to Use Snap Layouts in Windows 11

Snap Layouts in Windows 11 allows you to organize multiple open application windows into clean, predefined grid layouts on your screen. This feature streamlines multitasking by eliminating the need to manually resize and reposition individual windows. This guide covers how to enable Snap Layouts, use them with a mouse or keyboard shortcuts, and manage your snapped window groups efficiently.

How to Enable Snap Layouts

Before using the feature, ensure it is activated in your system settings:

  1. Open Settings (press Windows Key + I).
  2. Select System from the left sidebar.
  3. Click on Multitasking.
  4. Toggle the Snap windows switch to On.
  5. Expand the dropdown menu to customize preferences, such as showing available layouts when hovering over a window’s maximize button or dragging a window to the top of the screen.

Method 1: Using the Mouse (Hovering)

  1. Open the application windows you want to arrange.
  2. Hover your mouse cursor over the Maximize button (the square icon in the top-right corner) of any active window.
  3. A pop-up menu will display available layout grids (such as 50/50 split, thirds, four quadrants, or side-by-side with a priority pane).
  4. Click on the specific zone within the layout where you want the current window to sit.
  5. Snap Assist will immediately display your remaining open windows on the unused parts of the screen. Click the other windows to fill the remaining zones.

Method 2: Dragging to the Screen Edge

  1. Click and hold the title bar of a window.
  2. Drag the window directly to the top-center edge of your screen until the Snap Layouts drop-down bar appears.
  3. Hover your cursor over the desired layout template and drop the window into a specific pane.
  4. Select the remaining apps to complete the configuration using Snap Assist.

Alternatively, you can drag a window directly to the left, right, or corners of your monitor to snap it instantly without using the layout menu.

Method 3: Using Keyboard Shortcuts

  1. Press Windows Key + Z while inside any active window to display the Snap Layout menu.
  2. Numbered overlays will appear over each layout and zone.
  3. Press the corresponding numbers on your keyboard sequentially to choose a layout and assign the active window to a specific zone.
  4. Use the arrow keys and the Enter key to fill the remaining zones with other open windows.

You can also snap windows directly using Windows Key + Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Up Arrow, or Down Arrow.

Managing Snap Groups

Once your windows are arranged, Windows 11 automatically binds them together as a Snap Group.
