How to Use Layers and Transparency in Windows 11 Paint

Microsoft Paint in Windows 11 includes native support for layers and image transparency, transforming the classic graphics tool into a capable editor for multi-layered digital projects. This guide covers how layers work, how to manage and organize stacked visual elements, and how to utilize transparency to create and export clean graphics without solid background colors.

Accessing and Managing Layers

Layers allow you to place shapes, text, and images on top of each other without permanently altering the elements underneath.

• Open the Layers Panel: Click the Layers button on the right side of the toolbar, or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + L. A vertical panel will open on the right side of the canvas displaying all active layers.
• Add a New Layer: Click the + (plus) icon at the top of the Layers panel or press Ctrl + Shift + N. This creates a new, blank layer directly above your currently selected layer.
• Select a Layer: Click any layer in the panel to make it active. Any drawing, text, or pasting will only affect the selected layer.
• Reorder Layers: Click and drag a layer up or down in the panel. Layers at the top of the list appear in front of layers positioned below them on the canvas.
• Hide or Show Layers: Click the eye icon next to a layer to toggle its visibility on and off without deleting your work.

Working with Transparency

Windows 11 Paint natively supports alpha transparency, represented on the canvas by a gray-and-white checkerboard pattern where no pixels exist.

• Transparent Canvas: When working with multiple layers, newly added layers are completely transparent by default. If you delete or erase the contents of the background layer, the checkerboard pattern will appear, indicating that the area contains no color data.
• Automatic Background Removal: Click the Remove Background button in the Image section of the toolbar to automatically detect the main subject of an image and make the surrounding area transparent.
• Transparent Selections: When using the Selection tool, enable Transparent selection from the drop-down menu to paste or move items without carrying over solid background colors.
• Preserving Transparency on Export: To save an image with its transparent areas intact, go to File > Save as and select **PNG picture (*.png)**, as formats like JPEG do not support transparency and will fill empty areas with a solid white background.
