How to Set Up Fingerprint Sign-In on Windows 11
Setting up fingerprint sign-in on Windows 11 allows you to unlock your PC quickly and securely using Windows Hello biometrics. This guide explains how to enable and configure a built-in or external biometric fingerprint scanner, register your fingerprints, and manage your sign-in preferences directly through Windows Settings.
Prerequisites
Before configuring fingerprint authentication, ensure you have: * A Windows 11-compatible fingerprint reader (built-in or USB). * The latest biometric drivers installed via Windows Update or your device manufacturer. * A Windows Hello PIN already set up on your account.
Step-by-Step Configuration
Step 1: Open Sign-in Options
- Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
- In the left navigation pane, select Accounts.
- In the right pane, click on Sign-in options.
Step 2: Access Fingerprint Recognition
- Under the Ways to sign in section, locate and click on Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) to expand the menu.
- Click the Set up button. If the button is not visible or grayed out, ensure your scanner is connected and that you have configured a Windows account PIN.
Step 3: Complete the Windows Hello Setup
- A setup window will appear. Click Get started.
- Enter your current account PIN when prompted to verify your identity.
- Place your finger on the fingerprint sensor, lift it, and touch it repeatedly at slightly different angles as prompted on the screen until the progress bar completes.
- Click Close once the scan is complete.
Adding Additional Fingerprints
To ensure you can unlock your device using either hand or multiple fingers: 1. Return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. 2. Click Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello). 3. Click Add another finger and repeat the scanning process with a different finger.
Removing Fingerprint Sign-In
If you no longer wish to use biometric sign-in: 1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. 2. Expand Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello). 3. Click Remove. Your fingerprint data will be deleted immediately, and your account will revert to PIN or password authentication.
