How to Set Up an External DAC in Windows 11

Connecting an external Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) or soundcard to a Windows 11 PC significantly improves audio quality for headphones and speakers. This guide walks you through the entire process, from making the physical connection and installing drivers to configuring audio sample rates and enabling exclusive mode in Windows 11 settings.

1. Connect the DAC or Soundcard

  1. Plug the DAC or external soundcard into an available USB port on your PC using the provided cable (preferably directly into the motherboard or PC chassis rather than an unpowered USB hub).
  2. If your device requires external power, connect its power adapter and turn the device on.
  3. Connect your headphones, powered speakers, or amplifier to the output jacks on the DAC.
