How to Set Up a Picture Password in Windows 11

Windows 11 allows you to unlock your computer using a picture password instead of entering a traditional alphanumeric password or PIN. This authentication method lets you choose any personal image and draw a sequence of three gestures—such as circles, straight lines, or taps—directly on the picture. This guide outlines the exact steps to enable, set up, and sign in to Windows 11 using a picture password.

Step 1: Open Sign-in Options in Settings

  1. Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Select Accounts from the left navigation pane.
  3. Click on Sign-in options in the right pane.

Step 2: Add a Picture Password

  1. Under the Ways to sign in section, locate and click on Picture password.
  2. Click the Add button.
  3. Enter your current Microsoft account or local account password to verify your identity, then click OK.

Step 3: Select an Image

  1. Click the Choose picture button on the left side of the window.
  2. Browse your computer to find the image you want to use, select it, and click Open.
  3. Drag the picture to position it how you like, then click Use this picture (or click Choose new picture if you want a different one).

Step 4: Draw Your Gestures

  1. Draw three distinct gestures on your chosen image. You can use any combination of:
    • Circles

Step 5: Sign In with Your Picture Password

  1. Lock your screen by pressing Windows Key + L.
  2. Dismiss the lock screen to reveal the sign-in prompt.
  3. Perform the three gestures you created on the image to log in.

If the system does not recognize your gestures or if you forget them, click Sign-in options below the image to switch back to your standard text password or PIN at any time.
