How to Customize Pen Shortcuts in Windows 11

Customizing your digital pen’s shortcut buttons in Windows 11 allows you to quickly launch applications, capture screenshots, or access the Windows Ink Workspace with a single touch. Windows 11 provides built-in settings that let you assign specific actions to single-click, double-click, and press-and-hold gestures on compatible Bluetooth styluses. Tailoring these controls to your specific workflow can significantly boost your navigation speed and overall productivity on touchscreen and 2-in-1 devices.

Step 1: Open Pen & Windows Ink Settings

  1. Open the Settings app by pressing Win + I on your keyboard.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices from the left-hand navigation pane.
  3. Scroll down and click on Pen & Windows Ink.

Note: Ensure your pen is paired via Bluetooth. If your pen is not paired or lacks Bluetooth shortcut buttons, some button assignment features may not appear.

Step 2: Configure Shortcut Button Actions

Locate the section labeled Choose what your shortcut button does. If this section is collapsed, click the arrow to expand the options. You can configure up to three distinct interactions:

For each interaction: 1. Click the drop-down menu next to the gesture you want to configure. 2. Choose from the available default actions: * Windows Ink Workspace: Opens the quick-access menu for sticky notes and sketching tools. * OneNote: Launches Microsoft OneNote to start taking notes immediately. * Screen snip: Captures a custom screenshot or region of your screen. * Launch an app: Allows you to set a custom program to open. * Disabled / Nothing: Disables the specific button behavior.

Step 3: Assign a Custom App to a Shortcut

If you select Launch an app from any of the drop-down menus: 1. A secondary drop-down or Browse button will appear below the selected gesture. 2. Select an installed Windows application from the list, or browse your file system to select an executable file (.exe) for any third-party software (such as Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or a web browser).

Step 4: Adjust Additional Pen Behaviors

Under the same Pen & Windows Ink settings menu, you can fine-tune additional pen behaviors: * Allow apps to override shortcut button behavior: Toggle this on if you want specific creative software (like drawing or 3D modeling apps) to define their own custom commands for your pen buttons when those apps are active. * Choose which hand you write with: Select Right hand or Left hand to optimize palm rejection and menu orientations. * Show the pen menu after removing your pen: If your device includes a built-in pen slot or garage, you can enable an automatic toolbar pop-up upon removing the stylus.
