How to Create and Manage Storage Spaces in Windows 11
Storage Spaces in Windows 11 allows you to combine multiple physical drives into a single virtual storage pool to protect your data from drive failures or expand your overall storage capacity. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to prepare your drives, set up a new storage pool and virtual space, select the right resiliency type, and manage your configuration through Windows 11 Settings.
Requirements Before Starting
- Drives: At least two physical drives (internal or external via USB/SATA) to create a redundant pool. A single drive can be used for a basic pool with no data protection.
- Data Backup: Ensure all drives you intend to add are backed up, as creating a pool will erase all existing data on them.
- Permissions: Administrator access on your Windows 11 PC.
How to Create a Storage Pool and Space
Windows 11 includes a dedicated Storage Spaces interface within the modern Settings app.
- Open Settings (press
Windows Key + I). - Navigate to System > Storage.
- Scroll down and click Advanced storage settings, then select Storage Spaces.
- Click Create a storage pool and space.
- Enter a Name for your storage pool.
- Select the physical drives you want to include in the pool and click Create.
- Configure your storage space:
- Name: Enter a label for the virtual drive.
- Size: Allocate the desired capacity (you can overprovision beyond your physical drive limits if needed).
- Resiliency: Choose your desired data protection level (see descriptions below).

Understanding Resiliency Types
When setting up your storage space, select the option that best matches your performance and redundancy needs:
- Simple (No resiliency): Stripes data across drives. Increases performance and maximizes capacity but provides no protection against drive failure. Requires at least 1 drive.
- Two-way mirror: Writes two copies of your data across separate drives. Protects against a single drive failure. Requires at least 2 drives.
- Three-way mirror: Writes three copies of your data across separate drives. Protects against the simultaneous failure of two drives. Requires at least 5 drives.
- Parity: Stores data alongside parity information to protect against a single drive failure while maximizing usable space. Best for large archives and sequential read/write operations. Requires at least 3 drives.
How to Manage Existing Storage Spaces
You can manage, expand, or repair your storage pools at any time via Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage Spaces.
Adding Drives to an Existing Pool
- Select your storage pool from the list.
- Click Physical disks, then select Add disks.
- Choose the new drive(s) and confirm.
Expanding a Storage Space
- Expand the storage pool containing the space you want to resize.
- Click the Properties button next to the specific space.
- Under the Size section, enter the new, larger capacity and confirm the change.
Removing or Replacing a Drive
- Expand the pool and locate the Physical disks section.
- Find the drive you want to remove and click Properties.
- Click Prepare for removal and leave your PC powered on until the status changes to “Ready to remove.”
- Click Remove to safely disconnect the drive from the pool.
Deleting a Space or Pool
- Go to the space you wish to delete, click Properties, and select Delete space (this erases all data on that space).
- Once all spaces within a pool are deleted, click Delete pool to release the physical disks back into general use.
