Exclude Folders from Windows 11 Search Indexer

Windows 11 constantly scans your files to deliver fast search results, but you may want to keep sensitive, confidential, or private directories out of the search results for privacy or performance reasons. This guide outlines how to prevent the Windows 11 search indexer from scanning specific folders using the modern Windows Settings app and the classic Indexing Options control panel.

Method 1: Using Windows 11 Settings (Recommended)

The modern Settings interface provides the fastest way to add exclusion paths to the indexer.

1. Press Windows Key + I to open Settings.
2. From the left sidebar, select Privacy & security.
3. Scroll down and click on Searching Windows.
4. Locate the Excluded folders section.
5. Click the Add an excluded folder button.
6. Browse your file system, select the private folder you want to hide, and click Select Folder.

The chosen folder will immediately appear in the excluded folders list and will no longer show up in search results.

Method 2: Using Classic Indexing Options

If you need granular control over drive locations and nested directories, use the classic Indexing Options tool.

1. Press Windows Key + S, type Indexing Options, and press Enter.
2. In the Indexing Options window, click the Modify button at the bottom left.
3. If necessary, click Show all locations to display all system drives.
4. Expand the drives in the Change selected locations pane to locate your private folder.
5. Uncheck the box next to the folder you want to exclude.
6. Click OK, then click Close.

Verifying Folder Exclusion

Once excluded, Windows automatically clears the indexed entries for those folders in the background. To verify, open the Start menu search bar and search for the exact name of a file stored inside the excluded folder. If configured properly, the file will no longer appear in the results.
