Enable Dolby Atmos and DTS Sound in Windows 11

Spatial audio enhances your gaming, movie, and music experience on Windows 11 by creating a virtual three-dimensional sound environment using standard headphones or home theater setups. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to install, configure, and manage premium spatial sound formats like Dolby Atmos for Headphones and DTS Headphone:X, alongside the built-in Windows Sonic platform.

Step 1: Install the Necessary Spatial Sound Apps

Windows 11 includes “Windows Sonic for Headphones” by default, but third-party formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X require companion applications from the Microsoft Store.

  1. Open the Microsoft Store app from your Start Menu.
  2. Search for:
    • Dolby Access (for Dolby Atmos)
    • DTS Sound Unbound (for DTS Headphone:X)
  3. Click Install or Get to download the desired app.
  4. Launch the installed app and follow the on-screen prompts to activate a free trial or purchase a license.

Step 2: Enable Spatial Sound in Windows 11 Settings

Once your preferred app is installed and licensed, you can activate the format through the main Windows Settings.

  1. Press Windows Key + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to System > Sound.
  3. Under the Output section, click on your active playback device (headphones or speakers).
  4. Scroll down to the Spatial sound section.
  5. Click the dropdown menu next to Type and select your preferred format:
