Customizing your power button behaviors and sleep timers in Windows 11 allows you to optimize energy usage, prolong laptop battery life, and prevent accidental shutdowns. This guide walks you through the straightforward steps to adjust display and sleep timeout settings using the modern Settings app, as well as how to redefine what your physical power and lid buttons do via the classic Control Panel.

How to Adjust Sleep State and Screen Timers

You can change when your monitor turns off and when your computer enters sleep mode through the Windows 11 Settings menu.

  1. Open Settings by pressing Windows Key + I.
  2. Navigate to System on the left menu, then select Power & battery (or Power on desktops).
  3. Click on the Screen and sleep section to expand the dropdown menus.
  4. Set your desired time limits for the following options:
    • On battery power, turn off my screen after: Choose the duration for the display to turn off when running on battery.
    • When plugged in, turn off my screen after: Choose the duration for the display to turn off when connected to power.
    • On battery power, put my device to sleep after: Set how long the device waits before entering low-power sleep mode on battery.
    • When plugged in, put my device to sleep after: Set how long the device waits before entering sleep mode while plugged in.
