The Windows as a Service (WaaS) model was Microsoft’s strategy to shift Windows 10 from a traditional software product sold in periodic major releases to an continuously updated service. Under this framework, users no longer waited years for paid, monolithic upgrades like Windows XP, 7, or 8. Instead, Windows 10 received continuous security and quality fixes alongside scheduled, incremental feature updates, creating a single, evolving operating system intended to reduce platform fragmentation and simplify long-term deployment.
The Core Concept
Historically, operating systems followed a release cycle spanning three to five years. Each transition required significant financial investment, hardware upgrades, and complex migration projects for IT departments. Users were often spread across multiple versions of Windows, creating fragmentation that complicated software development and security management.
With Windows 10, Microsoft introduced Windows as a Service to treat the operating system like web applications and cloud software. By moving to this framework, Microsoft aimed to keep all compatible devices on modern, supported codebases, delivering value and new capabilities continuously rather than holding them for multi-year releases.
The Two Update Categories
To make this model manageable, Microsoft separated system updates into two distinct categories:
