Vorbis is a free, open-source, and patent-unencumbered lossy audio
compression format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. Created as an
alternative to proprietary codecs like MP3 and AAC, Vorbis is designed
to deliver superior sound quality at lower bitrates while remaining
entirely open for anyone to implement, modify, and distribute without
paying licensing fees. Most commonly distributed within the Ogg
container format as .ogg files, Vorbis serves as an
efficient standard across video games, streaming media, and open-source
software ecosystems.
Origins and Development
The development of Vorbis began in 1998, spearheaded by Christopher "Monty" Montgomery. The project was launched in response to the Fraunhofer Society's announcement that it would begin enforcing patent licensing fees for the MP3 format. To prevent audio technology from being restricted by software patents, the Xiph.Org Foundation engineered Vorbis from scratch, intentionally avoiding any patented algorithms.
