Why VOB Files Use MPEG-2 Compression
VOB (Video Object) files rely predominantly on MPEG-2 compression because VOB is the core container format defined by the official DVD-Video specification established in the mid-1990s. At the time the DVD standard was codified, MPEG-2 represented the pinnacle of digital video compression, balancing high-quality standard-definition video with the processing limitations of consumer hardware. Consequently, MPEG-2 was mandated as the required video codec to ensure that every commercial DVD would play universally on any standalone DVD player or compatible computer drive.
The DVD-Video Specification
A VOB file is not a generic multimedia container like MP4 or MKV; it is a specialized implementation of the MPEG-2 Program Stream (MPEG-2 PS). When the DVD Forum drafted the DVD-Video specifications in 1995, they required a standardized format capable of interleaving digital video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and menu navigation into a single continuous stream. MPEG-2 Part 2 (H.262) was chosen as the mandatory video standard for standard-definition content, establishing an unbreakable link between the VOB container and the MPEG-2 codec.
1990s Hardware Capabilities and Cost
During the development of the DVD format, modern codecs like H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC) did not exist, and MPEG-1 was insufficient for high-resolution television displays. MPEG-2 provided the optimal compromise:
- Decoding Complexity: Consumer electronics of the late 1990s could reasonably incorporate dedicated hardware decoders for MPEG-2 without driving manufacturing costs prohibitively high.
- Resolution Support: MPEG-2 reliably handled standard-definition resolutions (720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 for PAL) with interlaced scanning, which was essential for compatibility with contemporary cathode-ray tube (CRT) televisions.
Storage Capacity and Bitrate Balance
DVD media formats—primarily DVD-5 (4.7 GB) and DVD-9 (8.5 GB)—were designed in tandem with MPEG-2 compression profiles. MPEG-2 video typically runs at bitrates between 4 Mbps and 9.8 Mbps. At these bitrates, a single-layer or dual-layer DVD could comfortably hold a full-length, two-hour feature film alongside uncompressed PCM or multichannel Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio.
Backward Compatibility and Industry Standardization
The DVD specification was intentionally rigid. Manufacturers of DVD players were required to include dedicated MPEG-2 decoding chips to carry the official DVD logo. If alternative codecs had been introduced into VOB files later, millions of existing standalone players would have failed to decode them. While MPEG-1 was technically permitted for low-resolution content on DVDs, MPEG-2 remained the standard for full-quality video. By standardizing exclusively on MPEG-2 for standard-definition VOB files, the home video industry maintained unbroken compatibility across decades of hardware and software.
