  3. Bitrate Restrictions: If the video stream preceding the layer break has a high bitrate, the buffer drains rapidly. If the buffer empties before the laser locks onto Layer 1 and resumes data transfer, the video freezes, audio drops out, or the player stutters.

Why Standard DVD Authoring Discourages Seamless Layer Breaks

While modern DVD authoring software allows you to set a layer break as seamless, doing so introduces significant playback compatibility risks:

A non-seamless flag explicitly commands the player to pause video rendering, mute audio, refocus the optical pickup, fill its buffer from Layer 1, and then cleanly resume playback. This brief pause (usually a fraction of a second to two seconds) guarantees broad hardware compatibility.
