Can DVD VOB Files Support 720p or 1080p HD Video?

Standard DVD VOB (Video Object) files cannot store high-definition video such as 720p or 1080p under the official DVD-Video specification. A standard DVD strictly restricts video playback to standard definition (SD) formats, specifically 480i/p for NTSC and 576i/p for PAL. While modern software can technically mux high-definition streams into an MPEG-2 Program Stream container, doing so breaks compatibility with standard DVD authoring rules and standalone DVD players. The DVD-Video Resolution Specifications

Technical Architecture of a VOB File

A VOB file is a specialized container format based on the MPEG-2 Program Stream (MPEG-PS). In an authentic DVD-Video environment, a VOB file packages:

  1. MPEG-2 Video (or, rarely, MPEG-1) limited to SD parameters.
  2. Audio Streams in formats such as AC-3 (Dolby Digital), DTS, or uncompressed Linear PCM.
  3. Subpictures and Menus for navigation and subtitle overlays.

Because MPEG-2 compression is theoretically capable of encoding at 1080p, it is technically possible on a computer to encode a 1080p MPEG-2 video stream, package it into an MPEG-PS container, and name the extension .vob. However, this file is not a compliant DVD-Video file.

The standard successor to DVD is Blu-ray. Blu-ray natively supports 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video using modern codecs like H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC for 4K), and high-profile MPEG-2. Instead of VOB files, Blu-ray uses the BDAV MPEG-2 Transport Stream container format (.m2ts).

2. AVCHD on DVD Media

If you want to use inexpensive, standard DVD-R media to store HD video, the AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) format is the proper solution. AVCHD structures HD video (up to 1080p encoded in H.264) onto a standard red-laser DVD disc. While standard DVD players cannot read AVCHD discs, most standalone Blu-ray players can read and play them seamlessly.

3. Data Discs (MP4 or MKV)

For playback on modern smart TVs, computers, and game consoles, high-definition files (720p/1080p) should be encoded using MP4 or MKV containers with H.264 or H.265 codecs and burned as a simple data disc, rather than structured into a traditional DVD-Video file system.
