How to Use VLC as an Interactive Desktop Wallpaper
You can use the free, open-source VLC Media Player to turn any video into an interactive desktop wallpaper on Windows. While VLC doesn’t natively support full desktop interactivity (like clicking buttons inside the video), it allows you to overlay a playing video directly behind your desktop icons, effectively replacing your static background. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to enable this feature, manage your playback controls, and revert your desktop back to normal when you are finished.
Step 1: Enable the Video Wallpaper Feature
To get started, you need to configure VLC to allow videos to play in the background.
- Open VLC Media Player.
- Click on Tools in the top menu bar and select Preferences (or press Ctrl + P).
- Switch to the Video tab at the top of the preferences window.
- Look for the Output dropdown menu and change it from Automatic to Direct3D11 video output (or DirectX (DirectDraw) video output depending on your Windows version).
- Click Save and restart VLC for the changes to take effect.
Step 2: Set Your Video as the Background
Once the settings are adjusted, you can apply your chosen video to the desktop.
- Open the video file you want to use within VLC.
- Right-click anywhere on the playing video.
- Hover over the Video option in the context menu.
- Click on Set as Wallpaper.
Your video will instantly expand to fill the screen, sitting directly behind your standard desktop shortcuts and taskbar.
Step 3: Managing and Stopping the Wallpaper
Because the video is running through VLC, you can control it just like any other media file.
To pause, loop, or stop the video, simply bring the VLC application window back into focus from your taskbar. If you want the video to play continuously without stopping, make sure to click the Loop button on the VLC control bar.
When you want to return to your original static Windows background, right-click the video inside VLC (or go to the Video menu at the top) and uncheck Set as Wallpaper. Closing the VLC application entirely will also instantly restore your default desktop.
