How to Install a Custom Skin in VLC?

Changing the look of your VLC Media Player is a quick way to personalize your media experience, moving away from the classic gray interface to a modern, minimalist, or themed design. This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to download, install, and apply custom skins to VLC on Windows and Linux, along with troubleshooting tips for common setup issues.

Note: Custom skins are natively supported on Windows and Linux. The macOS version of VLC does not currently support custom skins due to platform-specific interface limitations.

Step 1: Download a VLC Skin

Before changing the interface, you need to acquire a skin file, which typically uses the .vlt extension.

Step 2: Enable Skin Support in VLC

By default, VLC uses its native operating system style. You need to tell the player to look for custom skins instead.

  1. Open VLC Media Player.
  2. Click on Tools in the top menu bar and select Preferences (or press Ctrl + P).
  3. In the Interface tab, look for the Look and feel section.
  4. Switch the toggle from Use native style to Use custom skin.

Step 3: Choose and Apply the Skin

Once the custom skin option is enabled, you can load your downloaded file directly through the settings menu.

  1. In the same preferences window, click the Browse button next to the “Skin resource file” field.
  2. Navigate to your downloads folder, select the .vlt file you downloaded, and click Open.
  3. Click Save at the bottom of the preferences window.
  4. Restart VLC for the changes to take effect.

Alternative Method: Drag and Drop

If you already have VLC set to “Use custom skin” mode, you can change skins instantly without opening the menus. Simply open VLC, drag your downloaded .vlt file from your file explorer, and drop it directly anywhere onto the VLC window. The interface will update immediately.

How to Switch Back to the Default Skin

If a custom skin is broken, difficult to navigate, or you simply want the original look back, right-click anywhere on the custom VLC interface. Hover over Interface, select Choose Skin, and click on Default. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + P to open the preferences menu again and switch the toggle back to Use native style.
