How to Increase Max Volume Beyond 100% in VLC?
VLC Media Player allows users to boost audio levels past the standard maximum to hear quiet audio tracks more clearly. While the default volume slider stops at 100%, VLC includes built-in settings that let you increase this limit up to 300%, alongside advanced equalizer tools to amplify sound further. This guide covers the exact steps to safely raise VLC’s maximum volume limit on both Windows and Mac, while also addressing how to avoid audio distortion and speaker damage.
Boosting VLC Volume Limit to 300%
By default, newer versions of VLC cap the volume slider at 100% to prevent accidental audio distortion. However, you can change the preferences to allow the slider to go up to 300%.
On Windows
- Open VLC Media Player.
- Click on Tools in the top menu bar and select Preferences (or press Ctrl + P).
- At the bottom-left corner of the preferences window, change the “Show settings” option from Simple to All.
- In the left-hand sidebar, expand the Interface menu and click on Main interfaces.
- Select Qt from the expanded list.
- Scroll down on the right pane until you find Maximum volume displayed.
- Change the value from 100 to any number up to 300.
- Click Save and restart VLC for the changes to take effect.
On Mac
- Open VLC Media Player.
- Click VLC in the top-left menu bar and select Settings (or press Cmd + ,).
- Click the Show All button in the bottom-left corner of the window.
- In the left sidebar, navigate to Interface > Main interfaces > Mac OS X.
- Look for the Maximum volume field on the right side.
- Enter a value up to 300.
- Click Save and restart the application.
Using the Audio Equalizer for Extra Amplification
If increasing the volume limit to 300% still isn’t loud enough, you can use VLC’s built-in Audio Effects to manually amplify the audio signal using the Preamp slider.
- Open VLC and start playing your video or audio file.
- Click on Tools (Windows) or Window (Mac) and select Effects and Filters (or press Ctrl + E / Cmd + E).
- Navigate to the Audio Effects tab, then select the Graphic Equalizer sub-tab.
- Check the Enable box to turn on the equalizer.
- Locate the Preamp slider on the far left of the equalizer graph.
- Move the Preamp slider upward to boost the overall audio signal.
A Note on Audio Distortion and Hardware Safety
While pushing VLC beyond 100% volume is highly effective for quiet files, it comes with risks. Amplifying audio past its original mastering limits can cause “clipping,” which introduces harsh digital distortion and crackling sounds. More importantly, consistently running your computer’s physical speakers at artificially boosted levels can cause permanent hardware damage. For the best balance of volume and clarity, increase the VLC volume gradually and consider using external speakers or headphones with their own physical amplifiers if the source file remains too quiet.
