How to Enable Minimal Interface Mode in VLC?
The VLC media player offers a clean, distraction-free viewing experience through its Minimal Interface mode, which hides the top menus and bottom control toolbars. This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to toggle this mode on and off using both keyboard shortcuts and menu settings on Windows and macOS. By streamlining the interface, you can maximize your screen real estate and focus entirely on your video content.
Method 1: Using the Keyboard Shortcut
The fastest way to switch to the minimal view in VLC is by using a hotkey. This instantly toggles the controls and menus on or off.
- Windows & Linux: Press
Ctrl+H - macOS: Press
Cmd+H(Note: On Mac, this may hide the application entirely depending on your version; alternatively, useCmd+Ctrl+Ffor native full-screen minimal view, or look for the “Hide Controls” option).
If you are on Windows, pressing Ctrl + H
will immediately strip away the interface, leaving just the video
window. Pressing the same combination again will bring the standard
controls back.
Method 2: Using the View Menu
If you prefer using your mouse, you can enable the minimal interface directly through the VLC menu bar.
- Open VLC and start playing your video.
- Click on the View tab in the top menu bar.
- Look for the option labeled Minimal Interface.
- Click it to check the box and hide the controls.
To restore the standard interface using your mouse, simply right-click anywhere on the playing video, navigate to View, and uncheck Minimal Interface.
Bonus: Automatically Start in Minimal Mode
If you want VLC to always open videos without the cluttered interface, you can change the default behavior in your preferences.
- Go to Tools > Preferences (or
press
Ctrl+P). - Under the Interface tab, look for the Look and feel section.
- Uncheck the box that says Start in minimal interface mode if you want it off, or check it if you want it permanently enabled.
- Click Save and restart VLC for the changes to take effect.
