How to Disable VLC Video Title Overlay
When you open a media file in VLC media player, it automatically displays the filename as a text overlay at the bottom or top of the screen for a few seconds. While this feature helps identify the playing track, many users find it distracting or redundant. Fortunately, VLC provides a simple built-in setting that allows you to permanently disable this video title overlay across all platforms, ensuring a clean, uninterrupted start to your video playback.
Disabling the Title Overlay on Windows and Linux
If you are using VLC on a Windows PC or Linux system, you can turn off the title text by navigating through the preferences menu using these steps:
- Open VLC Media Player on your computer.
- Click on Tools in the top menu bar and select Preferences from the dropdown menu (or press Ctrl + P).
- In the Simple Preferences window, click on the Subtitles / OSD tab located at the top or side.
- Locate the On-Screen Display (OSD) section.
- Uncheck the box next to Show media title on video start.
- Click the Save button at the bottom to apply the changes.
Disabling the Title Overlay on macOS
For Mac users, the interface looks slightly different, but the process to remove the start-of-playback text is just as straightforward:
- Launch VLC on your Mac.
- Click on VLC in the menu bar at the top-left corner of your screen and select Preferences (or press Cmd + ,).
- Click on the Subtitles / OSD icon at the top of the preferences window.
- Find the On-Screen Display setting.
- Uncheck the option labeled Show media title on video start.
- Click Save to lock in your new preference.
Advanced Method: Adjusting the Title Duration
If you do not want to completely disable the title overlay but simply want it to disappear much faster, you can tweak its duration using VLC’s advanced settings:
- Open the Preferences window (Ctrl + P on Windows/Linux or Cmd + , on Mac).
- At the bottom-left corner of the preferences window, change the “Show settings” selection from Simple to All.
- In the left-hand sidebar, expand the Video category and click directly on Subtitles / OSD.
- On the right side of the screen, look for the Source suffix or Show title for x milliseconds option.
- Change the value to a lower number (e.g.,
500for half a second) or set it to0to disable it entirely. - Click Save to confirm.
Once these settings are saved, restart VLC and open a video to enjoy a seamless, text-free playback experience from the very first second.
