How to Change VLC Language Without Reinstalling
If you accidentally set VLC Media Player to the wrong language or simply need to switch it to another tongue, you do not need to uninstall and reinstall the software. This quick guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to change the default interface language directly through VLC’s internal settings on Windows and macOS, as well as how to troubleshoot common language reset issues.
Changing the Language on Windows
Switching the interface language on a Windows machine takes less than a minute by navigating through the preferences menu.
- Open VLC Media Player on your computer.
- Click on Tools in the top menu bar, then select Preferences at the bottom of the dropdown menu (you can also press Ctrl + P as a shortcut).
- Ensure you are on the Interface tab (this is usually the default active tab).
- Look for the Language section at the very top of the settings window.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Menus language and select your preferred language from the list.
- Click the Save button at the bottom right of the window.
- Close and restart VLC for the language changes to take effect.
Changing the Language on macOS
On macOS, VLC typically mirrors the primary language of your operating system. However, you can force it to use a specific language within the application settings.
- Launch VLC on your Mac.
- Click on VLC in the top-left corner of the menu bar and select Preferences (or press Command + Comma).
- Locate the Language dropdown menu under the Interface settings tab.
- Select your desired language from the list.
- Click Save.
- Quit VLC completely (Right-click the icon in the dock and select Quit) and reopen it to see the updated interface.
What to Do If the Language Doesn’t Change
If the interface remains in the old language after a restart, your preferences file might be corrupted or locked.
To fix this, you can force a reset of the player’s configuration. Go back into the Preferences menu (Ctrl + P or Command + ,) and click the Reset Preferences button located at the bottom of the window. Confirm the prompt, restart VLC, and then attempt to change the language using the steps above once again.
