How do you add a custom watermark logo to a video using VLC?
Adding a permanent watermark logo to a video using VLC Media Player is accomplished through its advanced “Logo” video filter, which allows you to overlay an image directly onto your playback stream. While VLC is primarily known as a powerful media player rather than a dedicated video editor, this built-in feature provides a straightforward way to stamp your branding onto any video file without needing complex professional software.
Preparing Your Watermark
Before starting the process in VLC, ensure your watermark file is prepared correctly. VLC works best with PNG or TGA files, as these formats support transparency (alpha channels), which is essential for ensuring your logo doesn’t have an unsightly solid background box around it. Resize your logo to your desired dimensions using image editing software before importing it, as VLC offers limited scaling options once the filter is active.
Configuring the Logo Filter
To set up the watermark, open VLC Media Player and follow these steps:
- Go to the Tools menu at the top of the window and select Preferences.
- In the bottom-left corner of the Preferences window, under “Show settings,” select the All radio button to access the advanced settings.
- In the left-hand navigation tree, expand the Video section and click on Filters.
- On the right side, find the Video filter module dropdown or checklist and ensure the Logo video filter option is checked.
- Once enabled, go back to the left-hand navigation tree and expand the Filters menu further to click specifically on Logo.
Applying the Image and Positioning
With the Logo settings menu open, you can now define how your watermark appears:
- Logo file: Click the Browse button and select your transparent PNG or TGA file from your computer.
- Logo position: You can use the Logo position dropdown menu to select a preset location, such as “Top-Left,” “Bottom-Right,” or “Center.”
- Logo opacity: Use the slider or numerical input to adjust the transparency of the logo (0 being invisible, 255 being fully opaque).
- Logo delay and repeat: You can set the logo to appear for a specific duration or leave it to show throughout the entire video.
After configuring these settings, click Save at the bottom of the Preferences window. Note that these settings will now apply to all videos played in VLC. To remove the watermark later, you must return to the Filters settings and uncheck the “Logo video filter” option.
Permanently Saving the Watermarked Video
Because VLC is a player, enabling the filter as described above only adds the watermark during playback. To permanently export a new video file with the watermark burned in, you must use the conversion tool:
- Go to Media > Convert / Save.
- Add your source video file and click Convert / Save.
- In the Profile settings, click the Edit selected profile icon (the wrench tool).
- Go to the Video codec tab, then the Filters tab.
- Check the box for Logo video filter here as well, then save the profile.
- Choose your destination file destination and click Start to begin the transcoding process, which will bake the logo into the final file.
