Phantom power is a standardized direct-current (DC) electrical supply sent through balanced audio cables to power active electronics inside microphones. In video production, condenser microphones—such as boom-mounted shotgun mics and high-sensitivity studio capsules—require this steady supply (typically +48 volts) both to polarize their internal capacitive elements and to run built-in impedance conversion circuitry. Without phantom power, a condenser microphone cannot process sound waves into an audible audio signal.

How Phantom Power Works

Phantom power travels along the same standard 3-pin XLR cable used to transmit the audio signal back to the recorder, camera, or audio interface. It delivers a positive DC voltage (most commonly +48V, though standards range from 12V to 48V) equally across Pin 2 (positive audio) and Pin 3 (negative audio), using Pin 1 (the cable shield) as the common ground.

Because the voltage on Pin 2 and Pin 3 is identical, the potential difference between the two audio signal lines is zero. This electrical symmetry makes the power "invisible" or "phantom" to balanced audio signals and prevents it from interfering with the sound.
