What Is an Edit Decision List in Video Editing?
An Edit Decision List (EDL) is a structured, plain-text metadata document that records every edit decision made during the video post-production process. Historically, it served as the critical bridge between offline rough-cut editing and final online mastering, allowing editors to craft stories using inexpensive, low-resolution media before automatically assembling the final cut from expensive master tapes.
Understanding the Edit Decision List
At its core, an EDL is an ordered recipe for reconstructing a timeline. Rather than containing any actual video or audio media, an EDL consists entirely of alphanumeric data that describes source reels, track channels, transition types, and precise starting and ending timecodes.
Each line in a standard EDL represents an individual event or cut, detailing:
- Event Number: The sequential order of the shot within the program timeline.
- Reel or Tape ID: The identifier of the physical source tape or original media roll.
- Track Channels: Indicators for whether the cut affects video, audio channels, or both.
- Transition Type: Cut, dissolve, wipe, or key, along with transition duration in frames.
- Source Timecode (In and Out): The exact starting and ending timecode on the original raw footage tape.
- Master Timeline Timecode (In and Out): The exact starting and ending timecode where the clip must sit on the final program master.
The Historical Offline-to-Online Workflow
Before high-capacity hard drives and digital storage could handle uncompressed broadcast-quality video, post-production relied on a split workflow: offline editing and online conforming.
1. The Offline Editing Stage
In the offline stage, assistants created inexpensive, lower-quality tape dubs (such as U-matic or VHS) or digitized low-resolution proxy files into early computerized systems like CMX or early Avid Media Composer suites. Creative editors focused on pacing, storytelling, and structure without occupying expensive high-end broadcast suites. Once the director and producer approved the cut, the editing system exported the project data as an EDL file.
2. The Online Conforming Stage
The production team transported the EDL on a floppy disk—along with the original high-grade camera tapes (such as 1-inch Type C, Betacam SP, or Digital Betacam)—to an online mastering suite.
In the online suite:
- A computer-controlled system read the EDL line by line.
- The system instructed motorized tape decks to automatically fast-forward, rewind, cue, and capture the specified frame-accurate segments.
- The video switcher executed dissolves and cuts according to the EDL's precise instructions.
- The final, pristine master tape was recorded in a fraction of the time it would take to edit manually from scratch.
Industry Standards and the CMX 3600
As digital editing emerged, standardization became necessary so that different hardware and software systems could communicate reliably. The CMX 3600 format, developed by CMX Systems, became the universal standard. Its strict column-based ASCII text structure ensured compatibility across diverse edit controllers, video switchers, and tape decks across global broadcast networks and film facilities.
Evolution and Modern Relevance
While modern non-linear editing platforms handle complex, multi-layered digital video natively, the principles established by the Edit Decision List remain foundational to post-production. Modern production pipelines have largely replaced standard EDLs with richer metadata interchange formats such as XML and AAF, which support complex transitions, nested tracks, speed ramps, and effects parameters. Nevertheless, standard CMX 3600 EDLs are still used today for straightforward conform passes, audio post-production handoffs, and archival turnovers.
