What Are the Stages of Offline Video Editing?
Offline editing is the narrative backbone of post-production, where raw footage is organized, selected, and shaped into a cohesive story using lightweight proxy media. In long-form video production—such as feature films, documentaries, and episodic television—this process prioritizes pacing, performance, and structure over color grading and high-resolution rendering. The workflow follows five distinct stages: media ingestion and proxy creation, assembly cutting, rough cutting, fine cutting, and achieving picture lock for online turnover.
1. Media Ingestion, Organization, and Proxy Creation
The offline process begins by preparing the raw assets for smooth timeline playback. Assistant editors ingest camera original media (COM), verify checksums, and transcode the high-resolution files into lightweight editing proxies (such as Apple ProRes Proxy or Avid DNxHR LB).
Dual-system audio tracks are synchronized with camera scratch audio using timecode or waveform matching. The assistant editor then organizes the project into a structured bin hierarchy categorized by scene, take, camera angle, and shooting day. Scene and script metadata are thoroughly logged to allow the lead editor to retrieve specific takes quickly.
2. The Assembly Cut
In the assembly stage, the editor arranges the selected takes in script order without obsessing over frame-accurate timing or seamless transitions.
- Selects and Stringouts: Editors review the footage to create stringouts of preferred takes and standout actor performances.
- Script Order Alignment: Every scene is laid onto the timeline strictly according to the screenplay or story outline.
- Pacing Assessment: The resulting timeline serves as a baseline to evaluate whether scenes translate from page to screen as intended.
The assembly cut is typically much longer than the intended runtime, giving the creative team a complete view of all captured material.
3. The Rough Cut
During the rough cut phase, the editor begins actively sculpting the story, eliminating narrative redundancies, and establishing the fundamental rhythm of the project.
The focus shifts toward choosing the best emotional beats and narrative angles. Scenes that drag or stall momentum are trimmed or reordered. Temporary sound effects, basic dialogue cleanups, and temp musical score tracks are introduced to evaluate how audio cues affect the visual pacing. By the end of this phase, the project closely resembles the intended length and narrative direction.
4. The Fine Cut
The fine cut involves detailed collaboration between the lead editor, director, and producers to polish every cut to frame-level precision.
Every cut point is refined to maximize dramatic or comedic impact, smooth out continuity issues, and optimize visual match cuts. The team tests alternate takes, adjusts scene transitions, and refines the temp soundtrack to match the emotional arc of each scene. Studio and stakeholder notes are reviewed and integrated during multiple revision passes until all creative decisions align with the director's vision.
5. Picture Lock and Turnover
The final stage of offline editing is picture lock, which establishes the absolute timing of every shot in the project. Once picture lock is declared, no further changes can be made to clip positions, durations, or frame rates.
The assistant editor preps the locked timeline for the online finishing phase:
- Conform Turnover: Exporting EDLs, XMLs, or AAF files so the colorist and online editor can relink the sequence to the original high-resolution camera media.
- Audio Turnover: Packaging AAF/OMF files with extended frame handles for the sound designer, Foley artists, and re-recording mixer.
- VFX Pulls: Exporting specific frame ranges of visual effects plates alongside detailed pull sheets for the VFX department.
With all turnover packages delivered, the offline editing process concludes, enabling the color, sound, and visual effects teams to complete the final online master.
