Whether miking talent openly for broadcast or concealing the capsule for narrative video, following structured placement techniques ensures consistent sound levels and dependable wireless transmission.

The Optimal Placement Zone

The primary target for mounting a lavalier microphone is the center of the talent's chest, roughly along the sternum. Positioning the capsule between 6 and 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) below the mouth maintains a natural tonal balance without picking up excessive vocal plosives or chest resonance. Placing the microphone too close to the throat results in a muddy, boomy sound, while placing it too low on the torso introduces room echo and requires higher gain levels, raising the noise floor.

Because most lavalier capsules use an omnidirectional polar pattern, pointing the head directly toward the mouth is not strictly necessary. In fact, pointing the microphone head slightly downward or sideways can reduce direct breath hits and plosive bursts without diminishing voice clarity.
