Unrar Multi-Volume Files Across Different Folders

This article explains whether the command-line tool unrar can extract split, multi-volume archives when individual volume files are scattered across different folders. It details the default behavior of the utility, demonstrates how to use the interactive path prompt to locate missing pieces manually, and covers practical workarounds—such as symbolic linking and script-based aggregation—to handle dispersed archive parts efficiently.

By default, unrar cannot automatically search across multiple directories to locate the subsequent parts of a multi-volume archive. When you start an extraction using unrar x archive.part1.rar, the program expects every subsequent file (.part2.rar, .part3.rar, etc.) to reside in the exact same directory as the initial file. If an automated or non-interactive flag (such as -y or -inul) is passed, the command immediately terminates with an error when it reaches the end of the first file and fails to find the next part in the local directory.

However, you can extract archives across different locations natively using interactive mode. When executed without flags that suppress user prompts, unrar halts extraction as soon as a required volume is missing and displays a prompt:

Cannot find volume /path/to/archive.part2.rar
Insert disk with this volume and press Enter, or type new volume path:

At this prompt, you can manually input the full absolute or relative file path to the missing volume (for example, /storage/downloads/archive.part2.rar). Pressing Enter instructs unrar to continue extracting from that location. The utility repeats this request for every subsequent missing volume, allowing you to manually steer the extraction process across entirely different drives or directories.

Because entering file paths manually is impractical for archives with dozens of split volumes or headless automation scripts, alternative methods are recommended:

  • Symbolic Links: Create symbolic links for all scattered files inside a single temporary directory. Commands like ln -s /path/to/part*.rar /target/dir/ place lightweight pointers into one location, enabling unrar to treat them as local files without duplicating disk space.
  • Consolidation: Move or copy all archive parts into a single folder prior to running the extraction command.
  • Scripted Staging: Use a shell script to search for matching archive filenames across your directory tree, link or move them to a staging directory, execute unrar, and clean up the staging area afterward.
