Unrar Multi-Volume Archives: Do You Need All Parts?

When extracting a multi-volume RAR archive using the unrar command-line utility, you do not need to specify every individual part. You only need to target the very first file in the sequence, and unrar will automatically find, open, and extract the rest of the volumes in sequential order, provided all parts are present in the same directory.

How to Extract Multi-Volume Archives

To extract the entire set, run the extraction command pointing strictly to the first volume.

For modern naming schemes (e.g., .part1.rar, .part2.rar):

unrar x archive.part1.rar

For older or legacy naming schemes (e.g., .rar, .r00, .r01):

unrar x archive.rar

In these commands, the x switch extracts the contents while preserving the original directory structure. If you prefer to dump all files directly into the current folder without maintaining subdirectories, you can use the e switch instead.

Requirements for Automatic Extraction

For unrar to process multi-part archives seamlessly without errors, ensure the following conditions are met:

  • Same Directory: Every part of the archive must reside in the same folder.
  • Original File Names: Do not rename the split files. The utility depends on the original numbered naming pattern to locate the next volume.
  • Complete Set: While you only name the first file in the command, all subsequent volumes must exist on the disk. If a volume is missing or corrupted, the extraction process will pause, prompt for the missing part, or fail.

If you mistakenly run the command on a middle volume (such as archive.part2.rar), unrar will typically ask you for the location of the previous volume or report an error, as extraction must begin from the start of the data stream.
