UnRAR Switch to Prevent Pausing on Missing Volume

When extracting multi-volume RAR archives, UnRAR automatically pauses and waits for user intervention if a required split volume cannot be found. This article explains how to use the -y switch to suppress these interactive prompts, allowing extraction scripts to run non-interactively without hanging on missing archive parts.

The Switch: -y

The switch that stops UnRAR from pausing on a missing volume is -y.

By default, when UnRAR cannot locate the next archive volume in a sequence (such as .part02.rar or .r01), it halts execution and issues a prompt asking the user to provide a path to the file or insert the corresponding disk. Adding the -y switch forces UnRAR to automatically answer "Yes" to all interactive queries. In non-interactive environments, this prevents the command line from stalling and directs the utility to abandon the prompt rather than waiting indefinitely.

Command Example

unrar x -y archive.part01.rar

Preserving Partially Extracted Files with -kb

When using -y alone, UnRAR cancels the interactive prompt upon encountering a missing volume, but its standard behavior is to delete any corrupted or incomplete files that were in the process of being unpacked.

If you want UnRAR to stop pausing while also retaining whatever data was recovered from the available volumes, combine -y with the -kb (Keep Broken) switch:

unrar x -y -kb archive.part01.rar

Switch Breakdown:

  • x: Extracts files with their full directory path structure.
  • -y: Assumes "Yes" on all interactive prompts, disabling the pause when a volume cannot be located.
  • -kb: Prevents UnRAR from erasing partially unpacked files when extraction terminates unexpectedly.

Using these switches together ensures automated scripts, scheduled tasks, and headless server routines fail gracefully or complete partial extractions without hanging the process.
