How to Skip Main Archive Header in UnRAR

This guide explains how to handle archive header validation issues in unrar, whether you can bypass the main archive header check, and the exact commands to recover files from archives with damaged or problematic headers.

Can You Skip the Main Archive Header?

By design, unrar does not have a command-line switch to skip checking the main archive header.

The main archive header (HEAD_MAIN) contains fundamental metadata that the decompression engine requires to function. This includes:

  • Whether the archive is solid (files compressed as a continuous stream).
  • Whether it is part of a multi-volume split archive.
  • Global encryption parameters.
  • Header checksums and RAR version specifications.

Because unrar relies on these flags to allocate memory and configure its decompression algorithm, it cannot simply skip the main header block.

However, depending on why you need to bypass the header check, several direct workarounds achieve the desired outcome.

1. Extract Despite Header Errors (-kb)

If the main header is corrupted or unreadable and unrar aborts the extraction, use the -kb (Keep Broken files) switch. This prevents unrar from deleting extracted data when a header or CRC error occurs.

unrar x -kb archive.rar
  • x: Extracts files with full paths.
  • -kb: Tells unrar to retain broken or partially unpacked files instead of wiping them on exit.

2. Skip Ancillary Header Checks

If your issue involves secondary metadata attached to the main archive header—such as archive comments or authenticity verification blocks—you can suppress these checks:

  • Disable comment processing:
    unrar x -c- archive.rar
  • Disable authenticity verification checks (legacy RAR versions):
    unrar x -av- archive.rar

Combining these switches allows unrar to ignore non-essential header extensions that frequently trigger errors in modified or truncated files.

3. Repair Damaged Headers Using the Recovery Record

If the archive cannot open due to a corrupted main header block, use the repair command to rebuild the header structure using built-in parity data:

rar r archive.rar

This creates a new file named fixed.archive.rar with a regenerated header block. You can then unpack the repaired file normally:

unrar x fixed.archive.rar

4. Strip Prepended Data to Reach the RAR Signature

Sometimes an archive header fails inspection because extra bytes are prepended to the file (such as damaged SFX modules or concatenated data).

unrar searches for the magic signature bytes (52 61 72 21 1A 07 00 for RAR 4.x or 52 61 72 21 1A 07 01 00 for RAR 5.x). If it fails to locate them, manually trim the invalid leading bytes using dd:

  1. Find the hex offset of the RAR header:
    grep -b -a -o -P '\x52\x61\x72\x21\x1A\x07' archive.rar
  2. Strip the preceding corrupt data (replace OFFSET with the byte number returned by grep):
    dd if=archive.rar of=cleaned.rar bs=1 skip=OFFSET
  3. Extract the cleaned file:
    unrar x cleaned.rar

5. Alternative: Use 7-Zip for Lenient Header Parsing

If unrar enforces strict header checking that prevents access to the data, 7-Zip's command-line utility offers a more forgiving parser that can frequently read past invalid main headers:

7z x -p0 archive.rar

7-Zip ignores non-critical header corruption and extracts all discoverable file payload streams.
