How to Force Unrar to Use ASCII Progress Indicator

This guide explains how to force the unrar utility to display its progress indicator using standard ASCII characters instead of modern Unicode block characters or complex terminal escape sequences. By modifying your terminal environment variables or adjusting character encoding parameters during command execution, you can make unrar fall back to plain-text ASCII formatting for progress tracking in automated scripts, older terminals, or log files.

Use the Standard C Locale

The most reliable way to force unrar to render plain ASCII output is to temporarily override your system's locale settings. By default, unrar detects modern UTF-8 environments and displays Unicode block glyphs. Setting the locale to C or POSIX strips Unicode support for the process, forcing fallback ASCII characters:

LC_ALL=C unrar x archive.rar

To make this persistent for a script or session without affecting the entire system, export the variable before running your extraction commands:

export LC_ALL=C
unrar x archive.rar

Set a Basic Terminal Type

unrar checks the TERM environment variable to determine if the active terminal supports advanced cursor repositioning, ANSI escape codes, and graphical bars. Setting the terminal emulator type to dumb forces the utility to drop graphical rendering and use basic text characters:

TERM=dumb unrar x archive.rar

Combining both the terminal type and the locale ensures that both cursor manipulation and extended character sets are disabled simultaneously:

TERM=dumb LC_ALL=C unrar x archive.rar

Specify Character Sets with the -sc Switch

The console version of RAR and UNRAR includes a built-in switch to control character encoding for console messages and lists. You can use the -sc switch to force ANSI or OEM character sets rather than Unicode:

unrar x -sca archive.rar
  • -sca: Forces the console output to use the standard ANSI character set.
  • -sco: Forces the console output to use the OEM character set.

Suppress Complex Progress in Scripts

If ASCII art or dynamic terminal updates are causing buffer issues in CI/CD pipelines or log files, you can disable the dynamic progress indicator entirely using the -id (information display) switch:

unrar x -idp archive.rar

The -idp switch disables the percentage and progress indicators completely while preserving critical error messages and file extraction lists.
