How to Force Unrar to Extract Any File Extension

This guide explains how to force the unrar utility to extract an archive regardless of its file extension. While many tools depend on the .rar file extension, unrar determines archive validity by checking internal header signatures rather than file names. By specifying the exact file name and using standard extraction commands, you can process renamed archives, self-extracting executables, comic book archives, or extensionless files.

The Extraction Command

To force unrar to extract an archive with an arbitrary extension, run either of the following commands:

Extract with full directory structure (recommended):

unrar x filename.ext

Extract all files into the current working directory:

unrar e filename.ext

Replace filename.ext with the exact name and extension of the file you want to process (for example, archive.dat, installer.exe, or comic.cbr).

Handling Files Without Any Extension

Some versions of unrar may automatically append .rar if no extension is detected in the argument. To force unrar to target an extensionless file, append a trailing dot (.) to the file name:

unrar x filename.

The trailing dot explicitly tells the command-line parser that the file has an empty extension, preventing it from appending .rar.

Non-Interactive and Force Extraction Flags

To run the extraction process unattended without confirmation prompts, combine the extraction command with operational switches:

  • -o+: Overwrites existing files without prompting.
  • -y: Automatically answers "yes" to all prompts.
  • -kb: Keeps broken or partially extracted files instead of deleting them on error.

Example with force flags:

unrar x -o+ -y filename.ext

As long as the target file begins with a valid RAR signature (Rar! in the file header), unrar will parse and extract the contents regardless of the file extension.
