Extract Files Directly from RAR Recovery Volumes
This article examines whether the command-line utility
unrar can extract files directly from RAR recovery volumes
(.rev files). It explains the technical purpose of recovery
volumes, clarifies why direct extraction is not possible, and outlines
the correct method for reconstructing damaged or missing archive parts
so you can access your compressed data.
Can Unrar Extract Directly from a Recovery Volume?
No, unrar cannot extract files directly from a recovery
volume (.rev). If you attempt to run an extraction command
such as unrar x archive.part01.rev, the program will return
an error indicating that it cannot process the file as a standard
archive.
Recovery volumes do not contain the compressed file data or directory structures of your original files. Instead, they store algorithmic parity data—typically generated using Reed-Solomon error correction codes—designed solely to rebuild missing volumes in a multi-part archive.
How Recovery Volumes Work
When creating multi-part RAR archives, users can generate
.rev files alongside standard .partXX.rar
files.
- Each
.revfile can replace exactly one missing or corrupted.partXX.rarvolume. - If you are missing three archive parts, you need at least three
.revfiles to reconstruct them. - Recovery volumes are independent of specific part numbers; any
.revfile can reconstruct any missing part, provided you have enough total recovery files.
Because the data inside a .rev file is mathematical
redundancy rather than direct file blocks, the missing archive volumes
must be fully reconstructed before any extraction can occur.
The Correct Process to Restore and Extract
To access the files contained in an archive when one or more parts are missing, you must execute the recovery process first.
1. Place Files in the Same Directory
Ensure all available .rar parts and your
.rev files reside in the same folder.
2. Reconstruct Missing Volumes
Run the reconstruction command targeting any existing volume in the set:
unrar rc archive.part01.rarThe rc command instructs unrar to check the
archive set, calculate the parity data from the .rev files,
and automatically recreate the missing .partXX.rar
files.
3. Extract the Archive
Once the missing volumes are generated in the directory, extract the files using the standard extraction command:
unrar x archive.part01.rarBy allowing unrar to recreate the missing archive
segments first, you can successfully extract the contained data.
