Can Unrar Pause Extraction on Low Battery?
This article examines whether the command-line utility
unrar can automatically pause extraction tasks when a
laptop or mobile system reaches a low battery threshold. While the tool
is a standard for handling RAR archives, it lacks built-in
power-monitoring features. Below, we cover why this limitation exists,
how unrar behaves during intensive operations, and how you
can implement automated scripts to monitor your battery and pause the
process when power runs low.
Native Support in Unrar
The standard command-line utility unrar does not
natively support pausing extraction when your system battery is low. It
is designed purely as an archive decompression tool and does not
interface with system hardware monitors, power management APIs, or
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) settings.
When you initiate an extraction, unrar executes the task
continuously until the process finishes, encounters an error, or is
manually interrupted by the user, regardless of power source or
remaining battery life.
Workarounds: Pausing Extraction Using OS Tools
Although unrar cannot monitor battery status on its own,
operating systems provide ways to suspend and resume the process based
on power conditions.
Linux and macOS
On Unix-based systems, you can pause any running process—including
unrar—by sending the SIGSTOP signal, and
resume it using SIGCONT.
You can write a simple background shell script that periodically
reads the system battery percentage via
/sys/class/power_supply/ or utilities like
upower. When the battery drops below a specified threshold
(such as 15%), the script can automatically run:
kill -STOP <unrar_pid>Once the device is plugged in or charged, the script can resume extraction:
kill -CONT <unrar_pid>Windows
On Windows, unrar.exe does not provide an automated
pause option, nor does the WinRAR graphical user interface include an
automatic low-battery pause trigger. However, you can achieve similar
functionality using PowerShell to monitor battery percentage via WMI/CIM
queries (Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_Battery). If
power drops too low, the script can use debugging utilities or native
API calls to suspend the process threads until AC power is restored.
Summary
unrar cannot automatically pause extraction when the
system battery is low. To protect your battery or prevent unexpected
shutdowns during long extraction jobs, you must monitor power levels
using external operating system scripts capable of suspending
(SIGSTOP or thread suspension) and resuming the
unrar process dynamically.
