Can Unrar Extract Renamed Multi-Volume Archives?

This article explains whether the unrar utility can extract multi-volume RAR archives when individual parts have been renamed. While unrar strictly relies on predefined filename patterns to locate split volumes automatically, arbitrary renaming will break automatic extraction. However, successful extraction is still possible either through manual CLI prompts or by restoring the sequential naming pattern required by the RAR format.

How unrar Handles Multi-Volume Archives

To extract split archives automatically, unrar depends on standard sequential naming conventions:

  • New naming scheme: archive.part1.rar, archive.part2.rar, archive.part3.rar
  • Old naming scheme: archive.rar, archive.r00, archive.r01

When you begin extraction on the first volume, unrar reads the archive headers to determine that the file is part of a multi-volume set. It then mathematically increments the filename suffix to find and open the subsequent parts in the directory.

The Impact of Renaming Archive Parts

If you rename subsequent volumes to arbitrary names (for example, renaming archive.part2.rar to backup_data.rar), the automatic search fails. Although each volume contains internal header flags identifying its volume number and archive ID, unrar does not scan the entire directory to match headers against random filenames. It strictly looks for the expected filename sequence.

Can It Still Extract Them?

Yes, but with limitations depending on how you run the command:

  1. Interactive Prompting: If you run unrar x archive.part1.rar in an interactive terminal session without quiet or batch flags (such as -y or -inul), unrar will pause when it cannot find the second volume. It will display a prompt asking you to specify the path or name of the next volume. You can manually enter the renamed file's path to continue extraction.
  2. Non-Interactive / Scripted Failure: If you run extraction non-interactively, in automated scripts, or with flags that suppress prompts, unrar will immediately abort with an error (typically Cannot find volume or Unexpected end of archive).

Best Practices for Renamed Volumes

Relying on manual file entry for dozens of split parts is tedious and error-prone. The most reliable solution is to restore the original naming convention before running unrar:

  • Inspect the file headers using unrar lt <filename> to identify the correct volume number and base archive name.
  • Batch-rename the files back to name.part1.rar, name.part2.rar, and so on.
  • Execute unrar x name.part1.rar to allow the extraction to proceed without interruption.
