Can Unrar Extract EXE Icons Without Full Extraction?
This article examines whether the unrar command-line
utility can retrieve an icon embedded within an executable file inside a
RAR archive without decompressing the executable itself. The standard
unrar tool cannot perform this operation directly because
it operates solely at the file-container level rather than parsing
internal binary resources. The following sections explain the technical
reasons for this limitation and present the standard methods for
retrieving executable icons from an archive.
Why Unrar Cannot Extract Binary Icons
The unrar utility is designed to manage compressed file
archives. Its internal functionality is limited to reading archive
headers, unpacking directory structures, and decompressing raw file byte
streams.
An application icon is not stored as an independent file inside a
Windows executable (.exe). Instead, it is embedded within
the Portable Executable (PE) format, specifically inside the
.rsrc (resource) section. To isolate an icon, a utility
must:
- Parse the PE header.
- Locate the resource directory table.
- Find the
RT_GROUP_ICONandRT_ICONentries. - Convert those entries into an
.icofile structure.
Because unrar does not include a PE parser, it treats an
.exe file as an opaque sequence of bytes and cannot access
internal components like icons, manifests, or version information.
Piping Output as an In-Memory Alternative
While unrar cannot extract the icon by itself, you do
not necessarily have to save the full .exe file to your
storage drive to access the icon. You can decompress the file directly
to standard output (stdout) and pipe the data to a tool capable of
parsing PE resources in memory.
Using the print command:
unrar p -inul archive.rar program.exe | your_resource_parserp: Directsunrarto print the decompressed file content to stdout.-inul: Suppresses technical messages and banner text, ensuring the output stream contains only pure binary data.
The Recommended Workflow
To extract an icon from an archived executable, use a two-step process:
- Extract the file: Extract the specific
.exefile usingunrar e archive.rar target.exe. - Extract the icon: Use a dedicated resource
extractor on the extracted file:
- Linux: Use
wrestool(part of theicoutilspackage) viawrestool -x -t 14 target.exe -o icon.ico. - Windows: Use tools such as Resource Hacker,
PowerShell scripts leveraging the .NET
System.Drawing.Iconclass, or command-line PE extraction tools.
- Linux: Use
- Clean up: Delete the extracted
.exefile, leaving only the generated.icofile.
