Can unrar Extract 7z Files?
The command-line utility unrar cannot extract
.7z files; it is strictly designed to handle the
proprietary RAR archive format. This article explains the technical
limitations of the unrar utility, why it fails when
attempting to open 7-Zip archives, and the specific alternative tools
you should use to extract .7z files on Linux, macOS, and
Windows.
Why unrar Only Works with RAR Files
The unrar tool is maintained by RARLAB (the developers
of WinRAR) specifically to decompress files created using the RAR
compression algorithm. Its internal decompression engine is exclusively
programmed to parse RAR file headers and decompress RAR data streams
(including RAR4 and RAR5 formats).
Because the 7z format uses an entirely different
architecture—typically utilizing the open LZMA or LZMA2 compression
algorithms—unrar cannot interpret its headers or extract
its contents. If you attempt to open a .7z file using
unrar, the utility will return an error indicating that the
target file is not a valid RAR archive:
unrar x archive.7z
# Output: archive.7z is not RAR archiveHow to Extract 7z Files
To extract .7z archives, you must use software that
supports the 7-Zip format. The most common and direct utility for
Unix-like operating systems is p7zip or the official
standalone 7z command-line utility.
Using 7-Zip (Recommended)
Install the standard 7-Zip package on your distribution:
- Ubuntu / Debian:
sudo apt install p7zip-full - Fedora / RHEL:
sudo dnf install p7zip p7zip-plugins - macOS (via Homebrew):
brew install sevenzip
Once installed, use the x command to extract the archive
while preserving its original directory structure:
7z x archive.7zUsing unar (Universal Alternative)
If you prefer a single command-line tool capable of handling both
RAR, 7z, ZIP, and other formats without switching utilities, you can use
unar:
- Ubuntu / Debian:
sudo apt install unar - macOS (via Homebrew):
brew install unar
To extract the file:
unar archive.7zWhile 7z utilities can extract both .7z and
.rar files, unrar remains exclusively a
one-format tool dedicated entirely to RAR archives.
