Before DECtalk launched in 1984, most commercial speech synthesis relied either on rudimentary phoneme generation that sounded robotic and unintelligible or on primitive concatenated samples that lacked natural cadence. DECtalk was based directly on Klattalk, an advanced acoustic-phonetic synthesis system developed by MIT researcher Dennis Klatt. Instead of replaying chopped audio recordings, it modeled the human vocal tract dynamically.
