Who Designed Tor? Key Researchers Explained
Tor, originally known as The Onion Routing project, was created to safeguard internet communications through layered encryption and decentralized routing. The underlying concept was invented in the mid-1990s at the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) to protect government and intelligence communications. The technology evolved from a military research project into an open-source global privacy network through the work of a few core researchers and computer scientists.
The foundation of onion routing was developed in 1995 by three primary researchers at the NRL: mathematician Paul Syverson and computer scientists Michael G. Reed and David M. Goldschlag. Their goal was to create a secure system where users could access the internet without revealing their identity, location, or communication patterns to network eavesdroppers. They accomplished this by wrapping network data in multiple layers of encryption, routed through a sequence of intermediary servers where each node only knows the identity of the node immediately before and after it.
In the early 2000s, the technology transitioned into its modern iteration, known as the second-generation onion routing network, or Tor. Computer scientists Roger Dingledine and Nick Mathewson joined Paul Syverson to design and implement this new architecture. In 2002, they deployed the alpha version of the Tor network and later published the seminal design specification, “Tor: The Second-Generation Onion Router,” in 2004.
While Syverson, Reed, and Goldschlag are credited with inventing the original onion routing framework, Dingledine and Mathewson led the practical implementation, open-source release, and subsequent founding of The Tor Project as a non-profit organization in 2006. Together, these researchers established the core protocol and network that continues to underpin modern online anonymity.
