Is All of the Dark Web Hosted on Tor?
While the Tor network is the most famous and widely used platform for hosting hidden services, the dark web is not exclusively hosted on Tor. The dark web is an umbrella term for any encrypted network overlay on the internet that requires specific software, configurations, or authorization to access. In addition to Tor, several other independent decentralized networks—often referred to as darknets—host their own hidden websites, services, and peer-to-peer data repositories that Tor browsers cannot access.
Major Non-Tor Darknet Networks
Several alternative networks operate parallel to Tor, each with unique architectures, routing methods, and use cases:
- I2P (Invisible Internet Project): Unlike Tor, which
primarily routes traffic between users and the public internet, I2P is
designed from the ground up as a self-contained, internal network.
Websites on I2P are called “eepsites” and end in the
.i2pdomain. I2P utilizes “garlic routing,” an evolution of onion routing that encrypts multiple data packets together, making traffic analysis significantly more difficult. - Freenet (Hyphanet): Freenet is a peer-to-peer platform designed specifically for censorship-resistant publishing and decentralized data storage. It allows users to browse “freesites” and share files anonymously without depending on centralized web servers. Data is distributed redundantly across the network’s participating nodes.
- ZeroNet: ZeroNet uses Bitcoin cryptography for addressing and user identification, paired with BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology for site distribution. Websites hosted on ZeroNet are served directly from visitors’ computers rather than centralized servers, providing real-time, dynamic site updates that remain online as long as at least one peer is seeding the page.
- RetroShare and GNUnet: These platforms focus on friend-to-friend (F2F) and end-to-end encrypted communications, file sharing, and decentralized services. They restrict connections solely to authenticated, trusted peers, creating private darknets invisible to the outside world.
Key Differences Between Darknets
Each darknet network relies on its own proprietary protocols and
addressing schemes. A user browsing with the Tor Browser can only load
.onion domains and cannot natively resolve
.i2p or ZeroNet addresses without third-party gateways or
running the specific network’s native software.
Furthermore, while Tor relies on a central directory authority to maintain network consensus, alternatives like I2P and Freenet utilize fully distributed hash tables (DHTs) to achieve greater decentralization.
In summary, Tor is merely the largest and most accessible component of the dark web. The broader dark web ecosystem consists of multiple isolated, encrypted overlay networks that operate entirely independently of the Tor network.
