How to Enable Pluggable Transports in Tor Browser

Pluggable transports help disguise Tor traffic as regular internet browsing, allowing users to bypass censorship in regions where the standard Tor network is blocked. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to enable built-in pluggable transports or configure custom bridges in the Tor Browser on desktop devices.

Method 1: Enabling Pluggable Transports at Startup

If you are launching Tor Browser in an environment where Tor is actively blocked, you can configure a transport before establishing a connection.

  1. Launch Tor Browser.
  2. When the “Connect to Tor” screen appears, click Configure Connection instead of clicking “Connect”.
  3. Scroll down to the Bridges section.
  4. Check the box for Use a bridge.
  5. Select the option Choose a built-in bridge…
  6. Open the dropdown menu and select a transport:
    • Snowflake: Routes your traffic through temporary proxies operated by volunteers; effective against general censorship.
    • obfs4: Scrambles Tor traffic to make it look like random noise; widely effective against Deep Packet Inspection (DPI).
    • WebTunnel: Disguises your connection as standard HTTPS encrypted web traffic.
    • meek-azure: Masks your connection to look like traffic to Microsoft services (often slower, used as a fallback).
  7. Scroll back to the top of the settings page and click Connect.

Method 2: Enabling Pluggable Transports from Browser Settings

If Tor Browser is already open and connected (or failing to load pages), you can modify your transport settings at any time.

  1. Click the Application Menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings (or Preferences on macOS).
  3. From the left-hand sidebar, click Connection.
  4. Scroll down to the Bridges section.

Using Custom or Requested Bridges

If the built-in pluggable transports are also blocked by your network provider, you can request custom bridge addresses directly through the browser:

  1. Go to Settings > Connection > Bridges.
  2. Click Request a Bridge… next to “Request a bridge from torproject.org”.
  3. Complete the CAPTCHA prompt. Tor Browser will automatically fetch and apply new bridge lines.
  4. Alternatively, if you obtained bridge lines via email or another channel, click Add a Bridge Manually…, paste the bridge lines into the text area, and click Connect.
