What Happens When You Hold Safari's Navigation Buttons
This article explains the functionality triggered when you click and hold the Back or Forward navigation buttons in the Apple Safari web browser. Instead of moving just one page at a time, holding these buttons reveals a history list for your current tab, allowing you to quickly jump to specific previously visited webpages across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS.
The Drop-Down History Menu
When you click and hold (on a Mac) or tap and hold (on an iPhone or iPad) the Back or Forward arrow in Safari's toolbar, a pop-up menu immediately appears. This menu displays a chronological list of the webpages you have recently visited within that specific browser tab.
- Holding the Back button shows a list of the pages you visited prior to your current page.
- Holding the Forward button (which is only active if you have already navigated backward) shows the pages you moved away from.
Selecting any webpage title from this list will take you directly to that page, completely bypassing all the pages in between.
Key Benefits of This Feature
Using the click-and-hold method offers two main advantages over standard navigation:
- Faster Navigation: If you are deep into a research session and want to return to a page you viewed ten clicks ago, you do not have to click the Back button ten separate times and wait for each page to load. You can simply hold the button and select the exact page from the list.
- Bypassing Redirect Traps: Some websites use automatic redirects that immediately send you to a new page. If you click the Back button once on these sites, you are instantly redirected forward again, trapping you on the page. Holding the Back button allows you to skip over the redirecting link entirely and return to your previous safe page.
Viewing URLs Instead of Page Titles (Mac Only)
By default, the list that appears when you hold the Back or Forward button displays the titles of the webpages. However, if you are using Safari on a Mac, you can view the actual web addresses instead.
To do this, press and hold the Option key on your keyboard, then click and hold the Back or Forward button. The drop-down menu will now display the full URLs of your tab's history rather than the webpage titles. You can also toggle the Option key while the menu is already open to switch between titles and URLs in real time.
