Viewing Custom Website Permissions in Safari Settings
This article provides a clear guide on how to locate and manage the centralized list of websites that have been granted custom permissions within the Safari web browser. By accessing the dedicated Websites tab inside Safari's Settings window, users can quickly review and modify access levels for features like the camera, microphone, location, and notifications across all visited sites.
To find the centralized list of website permissions, open the Safari
browser on your Mac. Click on Safari in the top-left
menu bar and select Settings (or
Preferences on older versions of macOS) from the
drop-down menu. You can also press Command + , on your
keyboard to open the Settings window instantly.
Once the Settings window is open, click on the Websites tab located in the top navigation bar, which is represented by a globe icon. This specific tab is the central hub where Safari stores all custom rules and permissions you have granted to individual websites.
The Websites tab is divided into two columns to help you view your permissions efficiently:
- The Left Sidebar: This column lists all the specific permission categories, grouped under "General" and "Hardware." Categories include Camera, Microphone, Screen Sharing, Location, Notifications, Auto-Play, Pop-up Windows, and Downloads.
- The Right Panel: Clicking on any category in the left sidebar updates the main panel on the right. Under the Configured Websites section in this panel, you will see the centralized list of every website that has been assigned a custom permission for that specific category.
Next to each listed website, a drop-down menu displays the current permission state, such as Allow, Deny, or Ask. To change a website's permission, simply click its corresponding drop-down menu and select a new option.
If you want to completely erase a custom permission so the website reverts to your browser's default behavior, select the website from the Configured Websites list and click the Remove button located at the bottom-right corner of the panel. You can also change the default behavior for all unconfigured websites using the "When visiting other websites" drop-down menu at the very bottom of the window.
