Switching Between Translated and Original Pages in Safari

Safari's built-in translation feature makes it easy to read foreign websites, and toggling back and forth between the translated version and the original language is just as simple. This article provides the exact steps to switch between a translated webpage and its original text on Mac, iPhone, and iPad using the controls in the Safari address bar.

On iPhone and iPad

Once you have translated a webpage in Safari on your mobile device, the address bar icon changes to indicate that translation is active.

  1. Locate the Translate icon (two overlapping speech bubbles containing characters) on the left side of the Safari address bar.
  2. Tap the Translate icon to open the translation menu.
  3. Tap View Original from the pop-up menu. The webpage will immediately reload in its native language.
  4. To switch back to the translated version, tap the Translate icon (or the aA icon) in the address bar again and select Translate to [Your Language].

On Mac

Switching languages on a Mac follows a very similar process using the Smart Search field at the top of the browser window.

  1. Look to the right side of the Smart Search field (the address bar) on a webpage you have already translated.
  2. Click the Translate icon to open the drop-down menu.
  3. Select View Original. The page will revert to its original language.
  4. To view the translated page again, click the Translate icon in the address bar and choose Translate to [Your Language].
