Setting a Minimum Font Size in the Safari Web Browser
Reading small text on websites can cause eye strain and make browsing the internet difficult. Fortunately, Apple's Safari web browser for Mac includes a built-in accessibility feature that forces webpages to display text at a comfortable, readable size. This article provides a straightforward guide on how to navigate to Safari's Advanced settings and configure the browser to never use font sizes smaller than your specified point value.
To set a minimum font size in Safari on your Mac, follow these steps:
- Open Safari: Launch the Safari web browser from your Dock or Applications folder.
- Open Settings: Click on the word
Safari in the top-left corner of your screen in the
Apple menu bar. From the dropdown menu, select
Settings... (or Preferences... if you
are using an older version of macOS). You can also press the keyboard
shortcut
Command + ,(comma). - Go to the Advanced Tab: In the window that appears, click on the Advanced tab, which is represented by a gear icon on the far right side of the top navigation bar.
- Enable the Font Size Limit: Locate the Accessibility section near the top of the Advanced menu. Click the checkbox next to the option that reads Never use font sizes smaller than.
- Select Your Point Value: Click the dropdown menu containing a number right next to the option you just checked. Select your desired minimum font size from the list, which ranges from 9 to 24 points.
Once you select a number, the change takes effect immediately. Any open webpages using fonts smaller than your chosen point value will automatically scale up their text to meet your new minimum requirement.
Keep in mind that forcing a larger minimum font size may occasionally alter the visual layout of certain websites, causing text to overlap or wrap differently than the designer intended. If a website becomes difficult to navigate as a result, simply return to the Advanced settings menu and uncheck the box to restore the default web fonts.
